MINDFULNESS

Mindfulness, often generally described as” living in the moment”, is a powerful tool that can transform your running.  Mindfulness connects the mind and body to the soul to give even the most mundane life experiences an enriched meaning.  It’s not for everyone, as many people cannot relate to this, or it seems like a lot of overcomplicated mumbo-jumbo.  But if it sounds appealing, try mindfulness running exercises to learn by “doing” rather than trying to figure out what it all means.

MINDFULNESS EXERCISE #1:  FEEL THE HEALTH RUNNING THROUGH YOU

When you run, you generate energy as your body becomes coordinated and harmonious to propel you forward step by step.  Feel your breathing, your heartbeats, your arm and leg movements working in unison to make you healthier on the spot.

MINDFULNESS EXERCISE #2:  DEDICATE YOUR EXPERIENCE

You can make your running more purposeful by dedicating it to something, anything that you feel worthy.  You can prepare for a race raising money for a good cause.  You can aim to run 1000 miles for a friend.  You can dedicate your run to a fallen friend or family member.  This will motivate you and also bring satisfaction knowing that you made the simple act of exercise a noble effort.

MINFULNESS EXERCISE #3:  VOLUNTEER

Running can be a tool to inspire others.  You can volunteer in organizations that bring exercise to people with challenges.  You can train and coach Special Olympians, you can be a guide runner, and you can wheel disabled people through races.

MIDFULNESS EXERCISE #4:   CLEAN IT UP

Use a morning run to set the foundation for a healthy day.  Your workout gives you a great start in doing something positive for yourself, and you can use the momentum to set up a day of wellness.  Eat healthy foods, take healthy breaks, and sleep well to complete a day of clean living, all initiated by your running session.

***NOTE:  Extra focus on mindfulness sometimes can distract you from what’s around you.  Always run in safe, controlled areas where you can avoid traffic and other hazards.
