TAPING YOUR INJURIES!

TAPING YOUR INJURIES

Taping has long been used by physical therapists and athletic trainers to treat various sports-related musculoskeletal injuries. Kinesiology taping is a modernized method of taping, popularized by its use in Olympic athletes in recent years.

What is kinesiology tape (KT)?

Kinesiology tape (KT) is made of elastic, flexible porous cotton with water-resistant acrylic adhesive. The tape is thin, light, and breathable. KT’s elastic flexibility provides muscle and joint support while increasing or maintaining range of motion, hand, supports muscles and joints by reducing range of motion, which decreases function of the immobilized tissues.

Does KT really work?

Although research is limited for specific problems, KT has been shown to have many general benefits for injured athletes.

What are the benefits of KT?

When used appropriately, KT can help athletes stay active during treatment of mild injuries. Studies have shown that KT can

  • Support weak muscles to improve or restore function
  • Reduce congestion by improving blood flow
  • Decrease pain by improving feedback mechanisms in your nervous system.
  • Reduce muscle spasm, inflammation, and imbalances in strength.

Are there any risks of using KT?

Because research is limited, it is difficult to predict if kinesiology taping will help a specific injury. Improper application can be ineffective, or can worsen an injury. If you have numbness/tingling, swelling, redness, or increased pain, you should remove KT immediately and see your sports physician. If you develop an allergic reaction to KT, remove it immediately and discuss with your doctor.

When should I use KT?

If you have an injury, visit your sports doctor or therapist to make sure that KT will be appropriate to use as part of your treatment plan. KT can be used for both chronic, ongoing aches, and for new, acute injuries. KT must always be accompanied by physical therapy, activity modification, healthy lifestyle, and rest.

How long will KT applications last?

Whereas traditional rigid taping only lasts for about 15 minutes, one application of Kinesiotape can last for 3-5 days.

Can I apply KT myself?

KT can be applied in patterns ranging from very simple to very complex. Have a professional expert apply KT for the first time. Your physical therapist may be able to teach you to apply KT for your own injury. Otherwise, simply return to your therapist for reapplications of KT until your injury resolves.
