GENERAL APPROACH TO INJURIES

Injuries are a common and distressing part of running.  But, if you find yourself injured do not panic!  Follow these steps to get back on your feet.

1. STOP!

An injury means that you did more than your body could handle. This means that tissue has failed and needs to heal to regain function. You must respect your body’s limitations and rest is mandatory. Do not pressure yourself or your doctor to rush to get you to an upcoming race, competition, or event. Exercising with a lingering injury can cause permanent damage!

2. DO RESEARCH

Reading and watching medical content on the Web will not be enough to guarantee an accurate diagnosis. HOWEVER, your doctor’s visit will be short and the better you are educated about your injury, the more productive your visit will be. You will ask smarter questions and make better treatment decisions when you have at least a working knowledge of what is going on.

3. SEE YOUR DOCTOR

Your sports doctor sees thousands of injuries every year, so you will get immediate answers and helpful information with a quick consultation. You will get a diagnosis, which will immediately let you know what you are up against and what you need to do to get back on your feet.

4. KEEP YOURSELF BUSY

You will need patience to get through an injury. You may find yourself with a lot of extra time on your hands when you have to rest from your training routine. This can be maddening for people used to being active. Find other pain-free activities, spednd more time with friends or family, and focus on a new interest or hobby to maintain balance in your life while you are waiting for your injury to resolve.

5. FOCUS ON YOUR RECOVERY

Before you know it, you will be back on your feet. Keep your mind trained on positive thoughts for better energy, with a focus on any changes you can make that will help you return stronger than ever. Get or stay super healthy– Live squeaky clean with a healthy diet, plenty of sleep, and good life balance. Give your physical therapy your best effort.
