I want to start making juice at home for an extra healthy boost. What kind of juicer should I buy?

juicer

Juicing is currently a trendy way to get extra daily servings of fruits and veggies.  Different juicers make juices differently.  Here is some information about choosing a juicer that fits your needs.

MANUAL JUICERS

PROS:  Simple, cheap.

CONS:  Low-yield, lots of physical work.

Manual juicers use the “old-school” simple method of you squeezing your own juice.  Because we are limited by our strength, manual juicers fail to extract the maximum amount of juice possible with electric juicers.  Also, even with help from a hand crank, you can develop injuries from repetitive juicing with a manual juicer.  Manual juicers will only accommodate certain fruits, and very few vegetables.

CENTRIFUGAL JUICERS

PROS:  Easy to use, easy to clean, relatively cheap.

CONS:  Low-yield, nutrition-sabotaging.

MANUAL JUICERS

PROS:  Simple, cheap.

CONS:  Low-yield, lots of physical work.

Centrifugal juicers use high speeds to chop fruits and veggies and then separate the juice.  The pulp by-product is usually moist because this process is not very efficient when compared to other electric juicers. Centrifugal juicing is a violent process that heats and oxidizes its product.  As a result, juices lose their nutritional value, and can also taste less palatable.

MASTICATING (single gear) JUICERS

PROS:  High-yield.

CONS:  Expensive, difficult to clean.

Masticating juicers use low speeds to carefully “press” the juice out of fruits and veggies.  Pulp is typically dry, and there is a wide range of fruits and vegetables that can be used for juicing.  Very little heat is generated in this gentle process, so the juice remains nutritionally intact.

TRITURATING (twin gear) JUICERS

PROS:  High-yield.

CONS:  Most expensive

Triturating juicers use the lowest-energy process that extracts the highest yield from fruits and vegetables with the least amount of damage.  These juicers are considered the standard of the industry, but are the most expensive.
